Local Expertise
Smokey Point is the flat commercial and residential shelf straddling the Marysville–Arlington line along I-5, and it is one of the few places in north Snohomish County where big, level parcels sit right next to freeway access. Most of the ground here is old pasture, orchard remnant, and second-growth alder and cottonwood that reverted after farming stopped. That combination produces exactly the vegetation profile our equipment is built for: dense Himalayan blackberry mats, alder whips two to six inches through, salmonberry, and scotch broom along the fence lines and ditch banks.
Smokey Point picks up roughly 43 inches of rain a year, with the wet stretch running October through March and the ground rarely drying out before July. That length of growing season is why a Smokey Point lot cut back with a brush hog in spring can be shoulder-high in blackberry cane again by September. Clearing here is about removing the woody structure the regrowth climbs on, not just knocking down the top.
Smokey Point soils are mostly outwash sand and gravel over glacial till, with pockets of heavier silt where old drainage channels ran. The gravel drains better than the clay-heavy ground further south, but the silt pockets stay soft well into summer. Tracked forestry mulching is the right answer on both: weight spreads across the tracks instead of digging in, so you do not end up with the rutting, hardpan, and hauled-off topsoil that comes with a dozer-and-dump-truck job.
The open, flat terrain around Smokey Point takes wind straight off the Stillaguamish valley with very little to break it, and shallow-rooted cottonwood and alder are the first things to go over. After a big fall blow we get calls for downed trees across driveways, pasture fence, and shop roofs throughout the Smokey Point and Lakewood area. Because it is on our regular north run, we can usually be on site quickly rather than adding it to a distant queue.
Smokey Point is an unincorporated community, not its own city, so a lot of the work here falls under Snohomish County or Arlington and Marysville jurisdiction depending on which side of the line you are on. We work this corridor constantly and can tell you which set of rules your parcel sits under before anything gets scheduled. We do not keep an office in Smokey Point — our shop is in Snohomish, about 25 minutes south — and the machines come to you on a trailer.
