Gravel driveway grading in Mount Vernon: flat farm ground and hillside drives
Mount Vernon spreads across the Skagit River flats, where farm lanes and rural driveways sit on nearly level ground that stays wet through the winter. East of town, Little Mountain and the Skagit Highlands add sloped drives through fir and alder. On the flats, a driveway that loses its crown holds water in every low spot, and tractor, truck and delivery traffic turn those puddles into potholes. On the hill, runoff follows the tire tracks instead.
Gravel driveway grading here starts with finding where water can actually go. On level farm ground we look at how much cross-slope the lane can carry and which side has a ditch or field edge to take the runoff. The PR121 then reopens the surface, pulls back rock that traffic has pushed onto the shoulders, and rebuilds the crown. If the rock is worn thin, new 5/8-minus is quoted as an option.
